What is a HireVue interview?
A HireVue interview is a one-way video interview. The employer sends you a link, and you record answers to questions on your own, with nobody on the other end.
HireVue says most of its video assessments have five to eight questions. Each one appears as text or as a short video, and you get several minutes to respond. You can take it on a computer, a tablet or a phone.
Recruiters use the answers to make a first cut. HireVue’s candidate FAQ says hiring decisions are made by people, and that the top group moves on to person-to-person interviews.
How do you practice for a HireVue interview?
Practice out loud, on camera and against a clock. Prepare a few stories, answer each question in the time you’ll get, then watch the take and do it again.
- Collect five or six stories. A challenge you faced, what you did, and what happened. HireVue’s own tips suggest the same list.
- Set up like the real thing. A quiet spot, the light in front of you, and the laptop raised so the camera is near eye level.
- Run a timed set. Each question gives you time to read it, a 3-2-1 countdown, then the recording and its clock.
- Watch it back. Read the transcript, check your pace and filler words, and change one thing.
- Run it again, then with new questions. The real questions will be new to you, so rehearse the stories, not the exact words.
Can you practice for HireVue with AI feedback?
Yes. After each take, TrainVue shows your pace and filler words, and content scoring reads your transcript: how directly it answers, its structure, its specifics and what to fix first. It is practice feedback, not HireVue’s model, so it can’t predict an employer’s result.
Content scoring needs a free account, and your first 3 answers are scored free. Words the transcript misheard never count against you: the score shows how it read them.
Pace is counted in words per minute, and 120 to 160 reads as steady. Filler words such as um, uh, like and you know are marked in the transcript.
Does HireVue use AI to score you?
It can, when the employer adds an assessment to the interview. HireVue says its video assessments analyze only the transcript of your answers, not your face, video or audio, and that people make the final hiring decision.

How long do you get to answer a HireVue question?
The employer sets it. HireVue’s candidate FAQ says you get several minutes to respond to each question.
Practice with the times in your invitation if it gives them. If it doesn’t, start with TrainVue’s defaults for a new set, 30 seconds to read and think and 3 minutes to answer, and aim to finish with time to spare.
Each question can have its own times, so a short answer and a long one can sit in the same set.
Can you retake an answer?
It depends on the employer: some interviews allow a retake, and some allow none. Practice as if you get one take, so a retake is a bonus.
HireVue lets you try a practice question before the real ones start. TrainVue does the same: its practice question comes first and is never saved, and you choose how many retakes each set allows.
Can you use notes or AI during a real HireVue interview?
Follow the rules in your invitation. Some employers ask candidates not to use notes, AI tools or any other help, so do the work beforehand and answer in your own words on the day.
That work is what TrainVue is for: rehearse your stories out loud until they come without a script.
Is TrainVue affiliated with HireVue?
No. TrainVue is an independent practice tool made by Luminex Enterprise, and it is not affiliated with or endorsed by HireVue.
It doesn’t use HireVue’s software or questions. It practices the same one-way format, with your own questions or the sample set.
