What does HireVue’s AI look at?

Your words. HireVue says its video assessments analyze only the transcript of your responses, and they apply when the employer adds an assessment to the interview.

Fortune reported in January 2021 that HireVue had stopped using candidates’ facial expressions. Its chief data scientist said then that the content of the answers was the most important factor in predicting whether a candidate would succeed.

Does HireVue analyze your face, eye contact or voice?

No, according to HireVue. Its video assessments don’t use facial analysis, video or audio data to evaluate candidates.

HireVue’s own interview tips even say not to worry about eye contact with the camera. The recording still goes to the employer, though, so good light and clear sound are worth a minute.

Clear speech helps for another reason: a transcript can only use the words it caught.

Does the AI decide who gets hired?

No. HireVue says people make the final hiring decision, and its FAQ describes the interview and any assessment as a way for recruiters to make the first cut.

According to the same FAQ, the candidates in the top group move on to person-to-person interviews.

How do you prepare if the AI reads your words?

Work on what you say. Answer the question in your first sentence, give one specific example, and end with what happened as a result.

• Use STAR for stories. The situation in a sentence, your task, the actions you took, and the result, with a number if you have one.
• Prepare stories, not scripts. HireVue suggests a list of short stories about challenges you faced, your approach and your results. The questions will be new, so the stories need to bend.
• Answer the role in front of you. If the posting asks for analysis or teamwork, give examples of exactly that.
• Speak clearly and steadily. Around 120 to 160 words a minute is easy to follow.
• Say it out loud first. An answer you have only thought through comes out longer and vaguer on camera.

Can you practice with AI feedback?

Yes. TrainVue records each answer, marks your pace and filler words in the transcript, and content scoring reads what you said: how directly it answers, how specific it is, and what to fix first. It is practice feedback, not HireVue’s model, and it can’t predict a result.

Can you use AI during a HireVue interview?

Check your invitation and follow the employer’s rules. Some employers ask candidates not to use AI tools or any other help during the interview, so use AI to prepare beforehand and answer in your own words.
